Townes-Brocks syndrome or hemifacial microsomia-VACTERL phenotype? Braz. J. Genet.
Roth,Maria da Graça Martino; Garcias,Gilberto de Lima; Ferreira,Fátima Lassalete Soares.
We report a male with imperforate anus, pedunculated triphalangeal thumbs, hemifacial microsomia, microtia, preauricular tags and cardiac anomalies. This is the first individual with Townes-Brocks syndrome to have hydrocephalus.

TP53 mutations and loss of heterozygosity of chromosome 17 in colorectal tumors Braz. J. Genet.
Yamamoto,Lidia; Lopes,Ademar A.; Harb-Gama,Angelito; Nagai,Maria A..
The incidence of TP53 point mutations and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of chromosome 17 in colorectal tumors was determined in a group of Brazilian patients. We screened DNA samples from tumors and distal normal mucosa of 39 patients with colorectal cancer, for TP53 mutations by PCR-SSCP (single-strand conformation polymorphism) analysis. Chromosome 17 LOH was investigated using six PCR-based polymorphic markers and one VNTR probe. TP53 mutations were demonstrated in 15/39 of the cases. Mutations were distributed among all exons examined (five to eight), the majority of them being G/C to A/T transitions. LOH of chromosome 17p and 17q was detected in 70 and 46% of the tumors, respectively. There was a significant association between TP53 mutations and LOH...

Transferrin polymorphism in Amazon turtle (Podocnemis expansa) stocks Braz. J. Genet.
Teixeira,Aylton Saturnino; Jamieson,Alan; Raposo,José Carlos Paula; Vieira,Alvaro Alves.
The transferrin gene locus (Tf) was investigated in five populations of the Amazon turtle (Podocnemis expansa) sampled from five geographical areas in the Amazon region. This locus was polymorphic, showing three genotypes (Tfª Tfª, Tfª Tf b and Tf b Tf b), presumably encoded by two co-dominant alleles, Tfª and Tf b. All populations showed good genetic balance according to Hardy-Weinberg expectations, and may sustain the hypothesis of a single stock in the area investigated. The data are consistent with free flow of genes among the population samples examined.

Transient expression of a reporter gene introduced by bioballistic bombardment into Racosperma mangium (Leguminosae family) tissues Braz. J. Genet.
Quoirin,M.; Aragão,F.; Rech,E.; De Oliveira,D.E..
We report on an assay of direct transfer of DNA into calli and seeds of Racosperma (ex-Acacia) mangium, using a bioballistic method. We observed transient expression of the GUS gene in the treated tissues

Trisomy 13 mosaicism demonstrated only in skin fibroblasts in a patient presenting psychomotor retardation, pigmentary dysplasia and some dysmorphic features Braz. J. Genet.
Ferreira,A.P.S.; Mazzucatto,L.F.; Ramos,E.S.; Pina-Neto,J.M..
A Brazilian female infant presented delayed psychomotor development, skin pigmentary dysplasia and some dysmorphic features. Chromosome analysis from peripheral blood culture was normal, but the karyotype from skin fibroblasts revealed mosaicism for trisomy 13. This case demonstrates the relevance of performing chromosomal analysis of skin fibroblasts in patients with mental retardation, associated with pigmentary dysplasia of the skin and a normal karyotype in peripheral blood lymphocytes. To our knowledge, it is the first report of trisomy 13 demonstrated only in skin fibroblasts.

Two point deterministic model for acquisition of in vitro pollen grain androgenetic capacity based on wheat studies Braz. J. Genet.
Grando,Magali Ferrari; Moraes-Fernandes,Maria Irene B. de.
This article discusses, from the standpoint of cellular biology, the deterministic and indeterministic androgenesis theories. The role of the vacuole and of various types of stresses on deviation of the microspore from normal development and the point where androgenetic competence is acquired are examined. Based on extensive literature review and data on wheat studies from our laboratory, a model for androgenetic capacity of pollen grain is proposed. A two point deterministic model for in vitro androgenesis is our proposal for acquisition of androgenetic potential of the pollen grain: the first switch point would be early meiosis and the second switch point the uninucleate pollen stage, because the elimination of cytoplasmatic sporophytic determinants...

Use of canonical variates in genetic divergence studies Braz. J. Genet.
Ferreira,Daniel Furtado; Rezende,Gabriel Dehon Sampaio Peçanha.
Exact correlation coefficients between a canonical variate and measured traits were derived to evaluate genetic divergence among varieties. This method allows the plant breeder to determine which traits contribute significantly to genetic divergence and, also, to identify the most important among them. An example is presented, related to a trial where 28 varieties of maize were evaluated for two traits

Use of RAPD-PCR to identify true hybrid plants from crosses between closely related progenitors Braz. J. Genet.
Alzate-Marin,Ana Lilia; Baía,Gilson Soares; Martins Filho,Sebastião; Paula Júnior,Trazilbo José de; Sediyama,Carlos Sigueyuki; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Moreira,Maurilio Alves.
RAPD-PCR molecular markers were used to identify common bean and soybean hybrid plants derived from crosses between closely related progenitors, with no apparent phenotypic differences. Primers OP-F12 and OP-0O3 were used to identify true hybrids derived from crosses between common bean cultivars Rudá (A 285) and AN 910408, and soybean cultivars Cristalina and Bossier, respectively. Each primer generated one polymorphic DNA band which was present in the male progenitor and absent in the female progenitor. As RAPD bands are normally inherited as dominant characters, the presence of these bands in the F1 plants confirmed their status.

Using the best linear predictor (BLP) in the selection between and among half-sib progenies of the CMS-39 maize population Braz. J. Genet.
Data of corn ear production (kg/ha) of 196 half-sib progenies (HSP) of the maize population CMS-39 obtained from experiments carried out in four environments were used to adapt and assess the BLP method (best linear predictor) in comparison with to the selection among and within half-sib progenies (SAWHSP). The 196 HSP of the CMS-39 population developed by the National Center for Maize and Sorghum Research (CNPMS-EMBRAPA) were related through their pedigree with the recombined progenies of the previous selection cycle. The two methodologies used for the selection of the twenty best half-sib progenies, BLP and SAWHSP, led to similar expected genetic gains. There was a tendency in the BLP methodology to select a greater number of related progenies because of...
